A recent The Economist article, “The Delights of Deadlines,” explores something remarkably human: we often need a deadline to turn an intention into action.
The article points to research showing that people are more likely to make commitments around temporal landmarks, such as the beginning of a new year, month, week, birthdays, or holidays. These moments give us an opportunity to draw a line between what was and what comes next.
That is essentially what a New Year’s resolution is: a milestone that creates a psychological starting point.
But the article goes further. Deadlines also help us:
• Overcome procrastination: without a target date, tasks can remain permanently “to do.”
• Stop diminishing returns: discussion and refinement can continue forever unless there is a point at which we must decide and move forward.
• Coordinate people: deadlines create a shared rhythm between different teams and individuals.
This is exactly why milestones are so important in construction project management.
A construction project is not one deadline. It is a sequence of milestones that progressively turn a plan into a completed asset.
Design completed.
IFC drawings issued.
Permit obtained.
Long-lead materials procured.
Foundation completed.
Structure topped out.
MEP systems installed.
Testing and commissioning completed.
Substantial completion achieved.
Handover.
Each milestone creates a new beginning for the next phase.
And just like a New Year’s resolution, a milestone only works when it is specific enough to create action. “We need to make progress” is not a milestone. “Complete Level 10 structural works by September 15” is.
There is another important lesson from the article: deadlines should not simply create pressure. Poorly managed deadlines can result in rushed work, missing documentation, and quality problems.
The objective in construction is therefore not more deadlines.
It is better milestones, realistic, measurable, assigned to someone, and connected to the activities that follow.
Because ultimately, successful projects are built one milestone at a time.
A deadline gives us a finish line.
A milestone gives us the next place to go.
